The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has issued a strong condemnation of the Edo State House of Assembly’s recent suspension of 18 local government chairmen, labeling the action a serious threat to democratic principles and an egregious abuse of power.
The suspension followed allegations from Governor Monday Okpebholo that the chairmen had disobeyed his directives by failing to submit their financial records.
In an emergency meeting convened today, ALGON’s National Executive Council and Board of Trustees expressed their collective disapproval of the Assembly’s decision. “This suspension is not just a setback for democracy; it is a clear violation of the rights of elected officials,” stated Hon. Hamisu M. Anani, ALGON’s National Publicity Secretary. He emphasized that the chairmen were denied the opportunity to defend themselves, which he described as a fundamental flaw in the process.
The Association further argued that the suspension is invalid, citing a Supreme Court ruling that guarantees local governments autonomy. “The actions of the Edo State House of Assembly are unconstitutional, null, and void,” Anani asserted, calling for immediate action to rectify the situation. “We urge the Governor and the State Assembly to reverse this decision and respect the rule of law to strengthen democratic governance.”
The suspension has drawn criticism from various quarters across the nation, with many echoing ALGON’s concerns about the implications for local governance. In light of these developments, ALGON has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and put an end to what they describe as an abuse of power. “It is imperative that the President steps in to uphold the autonomy and independence of local governments as guaranteed by our Constitution,” Anani urged.
As the fallout from this controversial suspension continues, ALGON remains committed to advocating for justice and the preservation of democratic values in Nigeria. The Association’s call for action highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local governments in maintaining their rights and responsibilities within the broader framework of the nation’s democracy.
